TRADING IN COUNTERTRADE
At 33 V.S.Sahney’s string of achivements
will make a snug stockbroker feel slothful. As the first Indian to become
vice-president of the world’s first countertrade body, the Asia
Pacific Countertrade Association (APCA), he is
presently chairman, organising committee, of the
International Countertrade Conference being held in Delhi (Oct 25-27).
“The
purpose of APCA is to network, be a conduit for mediation and bring together
people interested in countertrade in the Asia Pacific region”, explains
Sahney. “ we act as a catalyst to improve standards.” Besides Indian
majors like ITC, Bombay Dyeing and MMTC, over a 100 delegates including
the CEOs of Motorola and ABB are expected to attend what Sahney proudly
calls a “qualitative gathering.”
But APCA is by no means Sahney’s only success story. As corporate president of the Sun Group of companies, his interests include trade in non-ferrous metals, fertilizers, hi-fashion garments, ESCROW accounts and agro products and he claims to be one of India’s largest supplies of fertilizer.
“Fertilizer and countertrade are my strengths,” Sahney says candidly. “And fertilizer is hot. We represent thee major urea companies, including a government manufacturer in Abu Dhabi.” Despite the paucity of genuine suppliers in a bogey- ridden market and 75 companies having already lost their performance guarantee bonds, Sahney is confident that “we are in the market to stay.”
As manager, countertrade in MMTC in 1984, Sahney looked into various barter and link deals. He claims to have been “instrumental in farming India’s countertrade policy in its initial stages.” And he has strong views on the issue. “Without a well-defined countertrade policy, it is considered an imoediment to free trade.” Sahney says. But he clarifies that “this is only if it is forced. Otherwise it can benefit both parties.”
And with countertrade being an issue that requires careful examination of facts and figures, a back-up system and specialisation, (“So that you are not misguided”) sahney claims that his Countertrade and Offset Consultants, “are one of the few who help in implementing the deal from start to finish.”
He is helping the government sell earthmoving equipment to a country in the Middle East in exchange for import of fertilizers. Having imported half a million tonnes of urea and DAP last year, his company is bagging and distributing this through state co-operatives.
And with increasing countertrade on a voluntary business thanks to liberralisation, Sahney expects business to boom.
